Sports Book Betting: San Francisco 49ers at Seattle Seahawks (12/24)

December 24th, 2011

PRO FOOTBALL — December 24

SAN FRANCISCO at SEATTLE

(Sports Book Betting Line: Niners -1.5, Total 37) — San Francisco is obviously very sound fundamentally and has some seeding issues to play for. And let’s face it - in a game where both teams are going to be looking to run the football, the Niners are the ones who defend it better (3.3 ypc allowed). And Alex Smith has been less mistake-prone than counterpart Tarvaris Jackson. But you have to put some stock in the fact that these Seahawks have not quit under Pete Carroll, and Marshawn Lynch has put together quite a second half of the season.

Big special teams plays and defense (2.9 ypc allowed) worked for San Francisco in the season opener. And the Niners have been a solid defensive team all year, holding opponents to just 13.2 points a contest. Five of the last seven games the Niners have played in have gone below this total, and the Seahawk defense (3.7 ypc allowed) might be able to keep Frank Gore under relative control. Look for a special effort out of that Seattle defense with playoff hopes still alive.

Sports Book Betting: Cleveland Browns at Arizona Cardinals (12/18)

December 18th, 2011

PRO FOOTBALL — December 18

CLEVELAND at ARIZONA

(Sports Book Betting Line: Cardinals -6.5, Total 37.5) — We’re looking at a likely matchup between quarterbacks Seneca Wallace and John Skelton, and for the Cards, it not as if Skelton has been a stranger to the position, regardless of his rather poor 54% completion rate. Arizona has, amazingly, won six of its last seven games, and could sneak in through the back door of the playoff race. We do, however, question their ability to pull away from opponents; as much as the Browns are virtually without offense (less than 14 ppg), Seneca Wallace is an experienced backup, and the defense has not left them out of a whole lot of games. Since he had 224 yards against St. Louis, Beanie Wells has gained just 94 yards in his last two games.

Sports Book Betting: Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Jacksonville Jaguars (12/11)

December 11th, 2011

PRO FOOTBALL — December 11

TAMPA BAY at JACKSONVILLE

(Sports Book Betting Line: Bucs -3, Total 41) — Mel Tucker, the defensive coordinator, took over the reins in J-Ville, and the team was not competitive on either side of the ball against San Diego. Even though the team didn’t exactly open things up, Blaine Gabbert may have had his best game against the Chargers, hitting 19 of 33 with a pair of touchdown passes. It is premature to say that this is a team on the upswing, but we can see that the Bucs are sliding, with six straight defeats, none of which have been particularly encouraging experiences for them, and Josh Freeman, who goes into this game questionable with a sore right shoulder, has regressed, with 16 INT’s. Unless he is in position to exploit the personnel shortages in the Jags’ secondary (three CB’s injured), hat puts more pressure on LaGarrette Blount (19 yards on eleven carries last week). Meanwhile, Maurice Jones-Drew leads the NFL in rushing (1137 yards) despite very little to keep defenses honest, and the Bucs have not gotten “hard” on the defensive line, even with the addition of Albert Haynesworth (4.7 ypc allowed).

JAY’S SPORTS BOOK BETTING PLAY: JACKSONVILLE +3 **

Sports Book Betting: Utah State Aggies at New Mexico State Aggies (12/3)

December 3rd, 2011

COLLEGE FOOTBALL — December 3

UTAH STATE at NEW MEXICO STATE

(Sports Book Betting Line: Utah State -14.5, Total 62) — If there was a goal in mind, Utah State has achieved it. They are taking a trip to the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. Yes, that’s right.

New Mexico State, which had beaten a Big Ten team (Minnesota) and fought like hell against UTEP, Hawaii and Nevada, looks like a team that has run out of gas. Limping home, they have been outscored 86-7 in their last two games. And then there was the 63-16 emasculation from Georgia a couple of weeks before all that.

NNMSU’s offense won’t be quite so lost, as Matt Christian, who sat out last week, will be back in the saddle in place of Trevaughn Colwell. That might give them a a fighting chance, especially if he can make a few connections with Taveon Rogers, who’s the leading all-purpose runner in the country. But Utah State carries all the momentum here, having won four straight. Those wins have come by a total of 16 points, though, and they’re already set for their bowl date, so we’re careful here.

JAY’S SPORTS BOOK BETTING PLAY: UTAH STATE -14.5 *

Sports Book Betting: Tulane Green Wave at Hawaii Warriors (11/26)

November 26th, 2011

COLLEGE FOOTBALL — November 26

TULANE at HAWAII

(Sports Book Betting Line: Hawaii -16.5, Total 58) — Hawaii has run into some unexpected trouble in its passing game, as Bryant Moniz went down with a leg injury. And the receiving corps has been banged up as well. So they have had to improvise. David Graves and Shana Austin have struggled; neither of them was able to hit 50% against Fresno State last week.

But this is a must game for Hawaii if they want to get to their own bowl game, and Tulane fits the profile of a team that is coming to the big island to see the sights - nine-game losing streak, with all but one of the losses by double digits, a lame duck coaching staff, a quarterback who throws for slightly over six yards an attempt, and a defense that has allowed 38 points a game. This could be a get-well pill for the Warriors.

JAY’S SPORTS BOOK BETTING PLAY: HAWAII -16.5 *
